The High Commissioner of Papua New Guinea, His Excellency Mr Charles Lepani, and The Australian National University (ANU) Vice-Chancellor, Professor Ian Young AO, helped commemorate the 40th anniversary of Papua New Guinea’s Independence last Friday by attending the opening of a significant exhibition in the Menzies Library.

Jointly curated by the ANU Library, ANU Pacific Institute, Pacific Research Archives, Pacific Manuscripts Bureau, CartoGIS, and the Research School of Asia and the Pacific of the College of Asia & the Pacific, the exhibition celebrates the cultural diversity and shared history between Papua New Guinea, ANU, and Australia.

The exhibition showcases original documents focusing on the self-government period and eventual independence, as well as paintings—loaned by the ANU Art Collection; drawings; sculptures; and photographs—a number provided by the National Archives of Australia, as well as items held in the private collections of active and retired researchers and ANU staff members.

The exhibition will run until 24 December 2015 in the Menzies Library foyer.
